Hailed as the “Queen of the piano”, the young Clara dazzled 19th century European audiences with her virtuosic, yet delicate and highly musical piano performances. Acclaimed as a composer before her legendary marriage to creative genius, Robert Schumann, her own works have been neglected until recently.
Clara’s compositions are at the heart of Art Sung – Clara Schumann, a semi-dramatised Lieder recital which also includes songs by the composers with whom she is inextricably linked: Schumann, Brahms and her colleagues, Mendelssohn and Pauline Viardot.
The narrative, drawn from extensive letters and diaries together with images from her pressed flower collection, paintings from the German Romantic movement and bespoke illustrations, gives voice to a woman for whom music was an emotional haven.
